Surprise? Motherfucker!
If you chose not to close the reading page after seeing that opening line, which resembles a vulgar slang joke, then congratulations, this article should give you something a bit different, hahaha~
Hello, my old friend, I am @wenser. I wrote this article to talk about the recently popular “famous,” “CC0,” “NFT” project—mfers. I want to share my views and discuss some phenomena I’ve observed. Just for reference, don’t get too excited, don’t FOMO, and don’t roast me, or I might also send you a “motherfucker (good luck)” as a polite gesture** (serious face.JPG)**.
【TL;DR Version】——
1. Original intention: Just for fun——A brief introduction to the creators and origins of mfers
2. Normal state: nobody cares——An overview of mfers market data and derivative/imitative projects
3. Takeoff: web2 VS web3——A detailed introduction to the takeoff process of mfers in the Chinese and English NFT fields
4. Follow-up question: for what?——Discussing what mfers mean to me and why people buy mfers
5. Inspiration: to be or not to be?——Discussing the uniqueness of mfers and its inspiration for NFT projects
6. Future: who is the final winner?——Discussing my views on NFTs and answering the question posed
INTRO.#
In recent days, the international situation has been exceptionally tense, with a series of follow-up effects from the Russia-Ukraine war continuing to pulse into more areas. One wave hasn’t settled before another rises, and influenced by various factors, the cryptocurrency market has also been “playing with heartbeats,” fluctuating wildly, giving a sense of “double kills for both shorts and longs.”
Of course, affected by this, the NFT field, after experiencing about two months of a boom period, has gradually cooled down. New projects breaking below their mint prices have become the norm, and launching projects has become a hellish test. Many leading blue-chip NFT projects like BAYC, MAYC, Doodles, Coolcats, Azuki, Clonex, etc., have seen varying degrees of decline from their previous peak floor prices. In this market environment, which is almost silent due to the cold, mfers, as a “good motherfucker weird” NFT project, has surprisingly risen against the trend, with its floor price skyrocketing from a previous low of 0.05ETH
to over 6.0ETH
, achieving an astonishing investment return ratio of 120 times
. In a market where returns of 5x, 10x, or even 50x are common, this return rate is indeed frightening.
With such a close floor price to the so-called “blue-chip NFT projects,” combined with the “minimalist” image resembling a “stick figure,” the “professional” bonus that seems to come from being a “programmer,” the “rebellious” attitude of holding a cigarette, the various “luxury watches” on their wrists, and the “quirky” expressions that seem to cry and laugh at the same time—elements that individually look strange but become increasingly pleasing when combined** (perhaps also because of the rising floor price, hahaha)**—it has become a hot topic of conversation among people during their leisure time.
Recently, many crypto media outlets have also confirmed this: people are genuinely curious about mfers—whether it’s the story, the founders, the special “cc0” mechanism, the seemingly loose yet highly cohesive hodlers, and the increasing popularity of mfers as a meme, along with the emergence of more and more imitative projects, all of which hide cultural phenomena and interpretations, such as:
1.mfers: The culture of despair, a new tribe of web 3.0 under subculture
3.CC0 + Meme: Why mfers are so popular?
These three articles discuss mfers from different angles, focusing on “despair culture/subculture analysis,” “analysis of the mfers hodler's journey,” and “popular culture research from the perspective of cc0 in the Birmingham School direction,” each with its own emphasis and viewpoints. Personally, I prefer the second article, as it is the only one that presents the purchasing reasons and some feelings after joining the community from the perspective of a “mfer,” while the other two articles take more of an “other” perspective, with a bit more scrutiny and inevitable speculation, which I won’t elaborate on here.
Of course, after all this, my main point has three layers—
1. From the perspective of NFT projects, mfers is a “blue-chip project” worth reviewing and studying;
2. From the perspective of the crypto field, mfers is a community/group with a high degree of “crypto native” and a strong “cryptopunk” spirit;
3. From the perspective of meme culture, mfers is an experimental sample reflecting social cultural trends, nurturing new interest groups, and transforming social organizational structures.
As the number of imitative NFT projects of mfers continues to increase, even reaching nearly 100** (including but not limited to chicks, bots, ahead, azuki, apes, invisible, etc.)**, our story must begin with a string of mysterious letters.
Original intention: Just for fun#
“Satoshi” (聪), this code name became a special symbol after the emergence of Bitcoin in 2009, as the anonymous inventor of Bitcoin is known as “Satoshi Nakamoto” (中本聪). Since then, “satoshi” has become a symbol in the crypto field representing “yyds (forever god)”. The creator of the mfers series NFTs is someone deeply influenced by Satoshi and the “cryptopunks spirit”—@sartoshi (you can tell from the ID that this guy is a fan of Satoshi, with an extra “r,” possibly meaning “real”).
As a seasoned collector in the NFT field, a holder of cryptopunks series NFTs, an “OG in the JPG world,” and a “surfing king” on Twitter, according to @sartoshi himself, his inspiration for creating mfers came from the following image—
In the rough yet direct lines of the simple picture, a father returns home, pushing the door open and shouting, “Son, did you win?” The son sits silently in front of a dark computer screen, or rather, provides a “stage”—to parody, to be absurd, to express freely; you can even write a “short essay” in the blank area, as long as you want.
Short essays (above), (below) two pieces.
After drawing several comics and turning some of them into NFTs, donating part of the NFT proceeds to charity, and gaining a certain ability to create economic value through comics to scam ETH, @sartoshi began to focus on “10K series NFTs.”
At this time, the previously shouted “motherfucker” during creation, tweeting, and countless memes, along with his impulse to curse at the many chaotic phenomena in the NFT field (after all, many people still think NFTs are just some JPG images, and indeed many NFT projects support this), combined with his fervent belief in the “cryptopunks series NFTs,” the teasing of many iconic NFTs, the strong support from the “NFT dream team” @westcoastnft, and the attempts by @punk#4156 and @punk#6529 to release NFTs in the public domain in the form of cc0, led to the official launch of the mfers series NFTs on November 30, 2021, at 4:20 PM** (remember this time point)**.
At that time, the mint price of the mfers series NFT project was only 0.069ETH
, and it sold out successfully within minutes (SOLD OUT). It must be said that @sartoshi’s identity as an NFT OG, his skills as an amateur comic artist, his membership in various communities, and his “homage” to many well-known NFT projects played a significant role in this.
From this perspective, mfers seems to have a much higher starting point than many NFT projects that have frequently broken below their mint prices recently, as it did not take the awkward path of being unsold and did not follow the footsteps of the two major “NFT pioneers,” cryptopunks and BAYC, which were initially ignored and later became popular.
However, after that, mfers and other ignored NFT projects seemed to have little difference.
Normal state: nobody cares#
Although @sartoshi later mentioned in his article “360° Big Smart Analysis” “what are mfers” that “I’m glad to see what a world with mfers would look like,” for quite a long time, it seemed that mfers did not bring anything different to this world.
At least from the market feedback, the overall trading volume of mfers remained calm for a considerable period (to be precise, excluding around January 18, roughly until February).
This is also the norm for many NFT projects: debuting at the peak, gradually declining to zero.
But what sets mfers apart from typical NFT projects is that it is a “highly decentralized” NFT project. Why do I say this? Because
· mfers has no official discord group (though there is later a so-called “official unofficial discord group”);
· mfers has no official team, no clearly defined decision-making and execution personnel (except for @sartoshi);
· mfers has no official roadmap, no step-by-step plans, and no Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 planning.
In other words, mfers has no so-called “project party,” and naturally, there are no so-called “retail investors,” or rather, the holders of mfers are all “project parties,” and also “retail investors.” Although this terminology sounds a bit schizophrenic, it is indeed the case. What @sartoshi wants to convey is: in the mfers world he created, “we all mfers” (we are all mfers), all beings are equal, with no distinctions of high or low, rich or poor, young or old, and there are no rules or plans here.
So, thereafter, @sartoshi continued to live as he did before creating mfers, happily surfing Twitter, NFT communities, and the web3 world every day.
But at the same time, it opened a new “window” for the NFT field—mfers’ subsequent development does not require the approval or review of the creator @sartoshi. After the NFTs are minted and enter everyone’s crypto wallets, the power of owning this NFT and this NFT project is completely and directly handed over to each person who holds it, or to those who recognize the “mfers spirit,” “mfers values,” and “mfers philosophy”—mfers.
@sartoshi is like an architect; he built a stage (or perhaps a worn-out “metaverse”?), prepared some props and costumes, and then he just ran away (not absconding, but happily and cheerfully returned to where he wanted to go), leaving the stage and opportunities for various mfers to come on stage, whether to express themselves, chase dreams in the entertainment industry web3, or enrich the “mfers universe.”
From then on, those who love to play, enjoy playing, and dare to play have a new theme of “play”—mfers. Just as @sartoshi said, the unplanned mfers series NFTs actually provided more and more mfers with the space to unleash their inspiration, time, energy, and talent, to “do whatever they want, or not do anything at all,” which led to the subsequent events—
@TheSimpsonzPunk (possibly the first derivative/imitative project)
(Note: The above ranking is not in order)
Perhaps nobody cares, but mfers care.
Takeoff: web2 VS web3#
So, what made mfers later “soar” to “strongly break through”?
—Is it because it represents self-deprecation, despair, lying flat, and the culture of despair?
—Is it because of memes, emojis, cc0, and popular culture?
—Or is it simply because it’s fun enough, meaningless enough, free enough, and decentralized enough?
Let’s not rush to answer. First, let’s briefly review the development of mfers in the Chinese NFT field (thanks to enthusiastic netizen and core member of mfers sub-universe @FootDAO @ShxnjiΞ):
1. mfers <0.3ETH Stage#
1. mfers first attracted attention in the Chinese community due to a tweet from the well-known NFT influencer Laser Cat @LaserCat397.eth:
和大家解释一下,纯粹好玩,因为这个NFT没有dis、也没有路线图、推特也没有,就一个创始人的推特。所以我来搞了这个小活动玩一玩,用我的10个mfers进行创作或者你自己的,还有愿意提供给大家创作的也可以发在评论区。
The first mfers cosplay competition began, and the five winners would receive competition rewards. Although on December 1, 2021, Laser Cat @LaserCat397.eth had already previewed the gas war (gas fee war, which generally occurs during popular NFT project mints, where you can choose to raise the gas fee to mint NFTs faster) for the stick figure mfers avatar series NFTs by top NFT collector @sartoshi (it’s worth mentioning that calling mfers “stick figures” was originally coined by Laser Cat), this tweet clearly did not attract much attention.
mfers.art/# 爆炸gas在印!
This day was December 2, 2021, three days after the mfers NFTs sold out.
2. Three days after Laser Cat @LaserCat397.eth initiated the mfers cosplay competition, the results were announced:
Mfers模仿比赛结束了,非常纠结选哪5位,在8位里面纠结了半天,最终在群友的帮助下选出了这5个,请获胜的私聊我,另外非常谢谢其他参加的朋友们,这个活动玩的很开心! 不过mfers地板还是很不行,短暂突破过2次0.2,但是都没站稳。
It was at this time that mfers imitations and emojis began to appear sporadically in some WeChat groups, and thereafter began to appear in more and more WeChat groups, discord groups, Twitter, etc. Although, as this tweet mentioned, the floor price of mfers still remained “not very ideal.”
Among these “cosers,” the “composition” was very complex: some dressed as women, some dressed as zombies with their wives’ cleaning masks, some agreed to take their girlfriends out for a year in exchange for cosplaying in the competition, some used animals directly, and some showcased their “little brats.” (This is a direct quote from @ShxnjiΞ)
This day was December 6, 2021, the seventh day after the official sale of mfers.
2. mfers <0.7ETH Stage#
3. Then came the long “silent period” until Laser Cat @LaserCat397.eth initiated the second mfers cosplay competition—
The Second Annual Cosplay Competition of mfers is Coming! Total Prizes are one lasercat net whitelist and three mfers nft! Enter the competition and you may win a prize! Mfers is an attitude to life, please join us!
At this time, mfers’ market performance had already achieved nearly five times the “floor price achievement,” and with the incentive of Laser Cat’s community whitelist, it sparked another wave of “mfers cosplay” frenzy.
mfers cosplay结果出来了,恭喜这4位,排名按照图片顺序,第一名lasercat nft,后面3位是mfers nft(目前地板0.3)获奖的请推特或者dc私聊我
The Second Annual Cosplay Competition of mfers is Coming! Total Prizes are one lasercat net whitelist and three mfers nft! Enter the competition and you may win a prize! Mfers is an attitude to life, please join us!
It can be seen that at this time, whether out of love for mfers or for NFT rewards, everyone had already “started playing,” which is also why early mfers attracted a particularly unique group of people.
4. Subsequently, it was time for @FootDAO to begin its “performance”:
On February 10, 2022, @FootDAO officially entered discord, building its own dedicated community. Of course, before this, a group of people had already started playing in WeChat groups.
As the mfers sub-universe, @FootDAO gathered a large number of “like-minded” individuals who recognized the “mfers spirit”—they, like @sartoshi, are generally seasoned internet surfers with their own attitudes and views on new things like crypto and NFTs, and they are not simply labeled as “angry youth,” “disillusioned youth,” “Sanhe masters,” or “rebellious generation,” but more like a group of “gentle hippies of the 21st century, new players who love to play, enjoy fun, and dare to play.”
They are keen to try new things and have the capital to do so, whether in terms of time or money; they have their own views on life and the world, along with a self-consistent value system. Some have both cats and dogs, some have children, some are students, some are workers, some are internet addicts, some are influencers in major internet companies, some are media reporters, and some are overseas Chinese, and some are NFT diamond hands.
As part of meme culture, mfers, which is extremely suitable for use as emojis, undoubtedly provided @FootDAO with a lot of space and “drafts” to express:
There’s the “gmfer” used for morning greetings:
And the “pop mfer” full of postmodern artistic vibes:
There’s the “bored mfer” looking at the bored ape on the computer:
The “mfers” riding a little cart and pulling a rickshaw:
The “astronaut mfers” in space suits:
And many more “all mfers”:
As well as a collection of dynamic emoji “mfers”:
When the power of memes is truly applied to the strongest form of memes—emojis, various “jokes” further accelerated the “human-to-human phenomenon” of mfers. And just as more and more people joined the “mfers emoji carnival party,” many didn’t expect that the mfers series NFTs, which once had a mint price of only 0.069ETH
, had already seen its floor price rise to around 1ETH
, and this seemingly simple threshold was enough to filter out over 80% of NFT projects on opensea.
3. mfers >1 ETH Stage#
After the floor price “stumbled,” “twisted,” “tragically,” “grandly,” and “joyfully” broke through 1ETH
, the next common plot unfolded—“big players entering the scene.”
First, a diamond-handed member of @XRabbitsClub, the well-known NFT “collector” @Hugo_Su_ bid for an alien mfers NFT, purchasing it for as high as 36ETH
, forcibly raising the “ceiling price” of mfers in the NFT field. Then came a wave of “happy bean players” entering the scene—after all, in many cases, NFTs are about the circle.
“You have a very cool mfer NFT, so I must have one too. I won’t say mine is cooler than yours, but at least it can’t be worse than yours.” —Saying this might make everyone feel a bit childish, like two kids competing over whose game card is cooler, but often, the so-called “consumer psychology,” or “NFT buyer psychology,” is not much different from this mindset.
To this day, although NFTs have gradually penetrated more people’s daily lives, whether existing in the form of contract data in digital wallets or as saved avatar images, the “social attributes” of NFTs remain an important foundation for their current popularity, if not the only one.
After all, although NFTs are currently one of the most attention-grabbing areas in the crypto field, their application scenarios and landing projects are still too few. Apart from PFP avatar NFTs, even many people hope to lead the next wave of trends with music NFTs, which still haven’t found the best way to “enter the homes of ordinary people,” and can only construct their narrative systems in the form of “on-chain data” or “music nodes.” As for gamefi, NFTfi, sports, photography, art, VR, utility, and various other NFTs, many people may not even notice these subdivisions, let alone understand and purchase them.
Thus, the importance and necessity of social media like Twitter for the NFT field and NFT projects is one reason—people always yearn for groups while fearing rejection by groups. NFTs serve as a “filter,” and possessing them allows you to find your “kindred spirits” to some extent—whether in social status, wealth, or aesthetic taste.
The red box in the screenshot above shows the number of tweets with the “Mfers” hashtag at a certain point in time, which reflects that the social media popularity of mfers remains relatively high. It’s worth noting that this is already the third month since the launch of the mfers series NFTs, and compared to many NFT projects that have purely turned into JPG images and gone to zero, the vitality of mfers is evident.
Each flower blooms in its own way. Compared to the tortuous process in the Chinese NFT field, the development of mfers in the English NFT field has been relatively flat, or rather, has remained lukewarm. Although the overlap between mfers holders and many English blue-chip NFT project holders is quite high.
Thanks to @sartoshi’s identity as a “cryptopunks OG” and the deep involvement of many cryptopunks in the mfers series NFT project, mfers has performed more hardcore in the English NFT field—because the overlap between mfers holders and cryptopunks holders has even reached an astonishing 8:1
, meaning that for every eight mfers, there is one cryptopunks (reportedly). Therefore, since its inception, every step, every market performance, and every online activity of mfers has been propelled by the cryptopunks community and its members.
However, unlike the “grand gestures” and “powered by love” of players in the Chinese NFT field, players in the English NFT field, or rather, cryptopunks players, are quite “protective of their feathers”—perhaps to maintain their “NFT OG” persona, or perhaps to adhere to the “NFA (no financial advice)” principle?—the real reason remains unknown. What we do know is that they did not step up to “provide help when no one was paying attention.” When mfers first experienced a downturn, the price once fell close to the mint price of 0.08ETH
, and these cryptopunks did not “stand up.” Instead, it was the true “mfers,” meaning those non-official community holders, who, driven by their own preferences, contributed to the promotion of mfers in their own ways—whether through memes, stories, or creating their own “mfers NFT” derivatives (imitations), or through mfers-related products, books, stories, songs, and many self-organized Twitter spaces, where mfers follow mfers, and mfers help mfers, etc., truly allowing mfers to achieve “coming from the masses and returning to the masses.”
As the floor price of mfers gradually rose to ** 1ETH
, many “big names” and “OGs” began to express their love and optimism for mfers, which is undoubtedly a great irony.
Just like these big names above, many are holders of mfers, and some even hold more than one, which is what we call “big holders.” But can we say they are truly “mfers”? Many true mfers who are genuinely playing, getting excited, and partying might find it hard to agree, and the affirmative answer to this question might also be a big “?”. Of course, this doesn’t prevent them from owning mfers, nor does it affect the legitimacy of @sartoshi’s viewpoint that “everyone is a mfer, and everyone is the kind of mfer they want to be.”
Follow-up question: for what?#
Having said so much, after a simple understanding of the past development of mfers, perhaps you and I, like many others, will instinctively ask: So, what’s so fun about mfers? What are mfers really for, and why are people so “crazy” or invested in them? Why are people willing to spend 2.7ETH
(worth about 45,000 RMB) to buy a “stick figure drawing”?
To be honest, at first, I found it hard to understand until I saw more and more images—
For example, this one—“Prison Storm Version mfers”:
And this one—“Big Head Dad and Little Head Son Version mfers”:
And this one—“Bald Qiang Version mfer”:
Of course, there’s also this one—“web2 VS web3 Version mfers”:
Naturally, there’s also this one—“Group Photo mfers”:
And this one—“Local DJ Party Version mfers” (the original is a video, which cannot be uploaded to mirror):
Of course, there are also this one—“Little Red Riding Hood Version mfers”:
And this one—“Superhero Series mfers”:
Naturally, more and more mfers came together, becoming a “wall painting” on a wall:
Oh, by the way, I almost forgot about the two “@Buttfaced mfers” I once minted. I read on their website that the creator of this series had been mocked and even bullied as a child for having a unique physical feature known as “butt face,” and that part of the funds would be donated to charity. I believe many people, like me, found it hard to resist the urge to mint.
And it is through the emergence and disappearance of various strange mfers that mfers gradually became a phenomenon and a “unique landscape” in the NFT field. The original mfers, like a leader surrounded by various derivatives (imitations), only need to shoulder the mfers flag, while other mfers will step up for various matters, even including the floor price—
Of course, online connections may not be enough for many people, so playful, daring, and fun-loving mfers have also begun offline activities, and they are quite grand—
The first “EVER MFER VIEWING PARTY” will be held in Shanghai;#
What? You say the timing seems a bit off?!#
Wrong, let’s try again!#
The first “EVER MFER VIEWING PARTY” will officially start on 3.19/20, (should be) welcoming all mfers to “attend,” “observe,” “communicate,” and “exchange insults”;#
If you’ve read this far and still want to ask me, “So what is the meaning of mfers? What’s so fun about it?” it might indicate that you really don’t fit into the atmosphere and community of mfers. Perhaps there are other NFT projects that suit you better, whether in terms of emotional value or material value.
Many times, many things, and many items cannot be simply quantified with ETH, USDT, or RMB. Although these dimensions of judgment are very important for many people, some people simply don’t care about them—not because they have a lot of money or not, but because they prefer a carefree, free, and playful way of engaging, being a “mfers repeater” in WeChat groups, discord, and Twitter.
Of course, there are also many technical big shots in mfers, such as @wong2, who once developed a subscription tool for the official @mirror and received $write tokens, created a small tool to generate mfers wallpapers https://mfers-wallpaper.vercel.app/6582, where mfers can replace the number at the back with their own mfer number to get a personalized wallpaper.
So you see, mfers still have some substance, hahaha#
At this point, let’s share a few more mfers meme images to lighten the mood—
Northeast Bathhouse Version mfers:
Sichuan Mahjong Version mfers:
As long as you want, you can even create many similar emojis or meme images, such as “California Canal,” “Turpan Lamb Skewers,” “Cantonese Claypot Rice,” etc.
A thousand people have a thousand Hamlets in their hearts, so a thousand people might have 100,000 “motherfuckers” on their lips! 凸 (艹皿艹 )
As for the concern many people, including many mfers holders, have about: Will the abundance of mfers derivatives affect the development of mfers?
I would like to express my views using a recent tweet post:
As mentioned in the post, about 46%
of people who purchase an imitative NFT will turn around and buy original NFTs (of course, the source and authenticity of this data need verification; I also left a comment asking for the source of the data).
This reminds me of a domestic industry that is quite similar to the development stages of my heart and NFTs—online literature, which also has a dominant platform, countless creators’ works displayed, and countless communities supporting fan groups. Of course, it also undergoes a transformation from “free novels” to “paid readers.”
In the NFT field, or on the mfers project, countless derivatives (imitations) may actually be a guarantee for the continued existence of mfers. Of course, this is just my personal opinion.
It’s worth mentioning that the Chinese mfers previously initiated a “performance art activity”—the “420
** Flash Action,” which can also represent certain traits of mfers (remember the launch time of the mfers series NFTs mentioned earlier? If you don’t remember, you can scroll up to check)——**
Inspiration: to be or not to be?#
It is clear that mfers, which originally came to this world as an NFT project, is no longer just a simple NFT project. Perhaps, from the moment mfers began as a thought in @sartoshi’s mind, it has already drawn a clear line from previous NFT projects that prioritize “realizing commercial value.”
After @sartoshi planted this seed, the mfers seedling began to grow different branches and bear different fruits in different regions, among different groups, and within different cultures.
Since then, the meaning of mfers has begun to be discovered by more and more people and endowed with more meanings. The NFT aspect of mfers merely provides a “draft,” while the range of artists gradually expands from just @sartoshi to more individuals, including artists, creators, and countless netizens who are simply “surfing in the Internet.”
Everyone adds their desired and anticipated strokes to it, some of which remain as new marks, while others are merely to add something or simply to assert their presence. However, in the process of mfers gradually becoming an NFT project that more and more people discuss, a discussion about creative freedom, and even a gradually grand social movement, they have indeed made their contribution—whether it’s changing their avatars, creating emojis, writing a mfer-related joke or short story, initiating their own NFT project, or hosting a “mfer talk show” in Twitter spaces.
What’s important is not the floor price, nor who knows, praises, writes about, or remembers mfers, but that everyone can be a mfer, and everyone can shout “motherfucker” to express their various complex, simple, or meaningless emotions and feelings.
As I mentioned earlier, many people, including myself, purchase NFTs not only to gain economic returns, i.e., to make money, but more so to seek a sense of “participation”—to participate in a community, a brand, a group, a piece of history, a trend, or a movement, even if it’s just a tiny splash in the vast ocean, it signifies that they once existed, witnessed, and became part of it.
Therefore, if an NFT project cannot evoke people’s “sense of participation”—whether through hunger marketing by closing discord communities, or through various activities and games within the community, or through diverse “emoji contests” and “cosplay contests”—then this project is destined to fail, let alone its long-term sustainable development, the ups and downs of popularity, and becoming a “social phenomenon.”
Additionally, the insights that mfers can provide to NFT projects, and the reaffirmation of my personal judgment on whether an NFT project is of high quality, may include the following aspects:
1. The style of the founder/founding team determines the identity attributes of the NFT community and holders (similar to the “law of attraction,” you are the kind of person who attracts similar people to you);
2. Either let the community believe in you, or you must believe in the community; this determines whether an NFT has the potential for long-term existence. The so-called consensus often comes from belief. Besides mfers, BAYC, and other projects like Ghosts and boomgala can serve as evidence for this.
3. The NFT field is still in its early stages, and the exploration of cc0 is just a small step. Whether it’s mfers or more NFT projects, many questions need to be answered: What exactly are you selling with your NFT? What are the more practical applications and applicable scenarios for NFTs? How can NFTs be better integrated with DAO, Gamefi, Defi, Socialfi, and other fields?
Future: who is the final winner?#
NFTs began around 2017, surged in 2021, becoming one of the hottest tracks in the crypto field, but they are still in their early stages, and the greater potential of NFTs remains to be developed.
Additionally, let me share a few personal views on the topic of “future trends of NFTs”:
1. The NFT market is still in an “ecological positioning state.” So-called blue-chip projects, or quality projects, must have pioneering innovations in one or multiple aspects. Whether it’s punks, bored apes, or later doodles and azuki, they occupy their “ecological niches,” which leads to subsequent imitations and other followers. Therefore, every NFT needs to think about what aspect it is “first” in.
2. The NFT market is still in its early stages. In other words, while platforms like opensea list over 150,000 NFTs daily, 99% of NFTs do not survive beyond six months. NFT projects with insufficiently powerful founding teams, weak community consensus, shallow narrative impact, and unremarkable design aesthetics are destined to be swept into the dustbin of history.
3. The NFT market will continue to serve as the best way to attract more players and crypto newcomers into the crypto world, as the barriers are low, the presentation is intuitive, the imaginative space is vast, and many application scenarios are yet to be developed. The current market cooling is fundamentally a gradual cooling of the previously two months of fervent emotions. Only when some projects that exploit retail investors exit the stage can NFTs be reborn without breaking.
In conclusion, let me wrap up with a sentence:
A person truly dies when no one remembers them; a living NFT exists in the lives of those who love it.#
Returning to the initial question posed, whether mfers win or not may not be a good question, as each mfer did not come here for “victory” or to “win,” but each of them will become a “winner” in life, sooner or later.
Finally, to formally conclude this article, I’ll share a tweet from @MfersAhead creator @MetaBananas:
-why u bought a mfer?
-this is the answer.
(1/7) bought an mfer, this is why 🧵
You only live once, motherfucker, just do what you really want to do!
